Birchover to the Nine Stone Ladies

Walking Time – 1h 10min

Distance – 2.8mi

Total ascent  – 426ft

This is a short walk that stars from the little village of Birchover, You can park on the main road through the village.

It is a fairly easy walk and you get to see the Nine Ladies Stone Circles, which legend has it that the ladies were turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath and the King stone was the fiddler! They are in fact a stone monument that is over 4000 years old!!!

There are a couple of other interesting features on this walk A square tower which was built sometime after 1832 by the local landowner, William Pole Thornhill (1807-1876), to commemorate Earl Grey, the politician who successfully fought for the reform of Parliament in the early 19th century.

There are some interesting rocks and rock formations on the Moor and the wooded areas with the silver birch that is striking against the colours of the backen and heather.

A feast for the eyes for such a short walk, oh and there are two pubs in Burchover we had lunch after at the Druid, the food was lovley and the staff very friendly.
